The Software Industry: Ten Lessons for Long Life

Abstract

The software industry is headed into a major transition fueled by the increasing availability of high quality, pervasive networking. This change is as fundamental as the transformation of the hardware industry over the past 25 years that was driven by advances in microprocessor technology. Whether one thinks of this software as service, ASPs, web services, or network computing, the face of the software industry will never be the same. This talk will focus on some of the key issues that challenge the industry, academia, and the research community and help determine who will succeed and who will fail.

BIO: Timothy Chou is President of Oracle Corporation~Rs new Oracle.com. Under his leadership, the company has become the world's leading applications service provider, growing the business over ten-fold in the past year. In this capacity he has led the strategic and tactical transformation of Oracle from an offline provider of enterprise business software to a provider of online enterprise-class business services through the Internet. Customers range from the very large such as Cigna, International and Bank of Montreal to new fast growing companies such as McDonald's Chipotle and Triton Network Systems. Before coming to Oracle, he was the Chief Operating Officer at Reasoning, Inc., an IT service provider which under his guidance grew from a startup to over $30M in revenue in less than 3 years. Prior to Reasoning he held numerous executive level positions at Tandem Computers. Dr. Chou has more than 20 years of experience in executive management, research & development and product marketing.

He received his Master of Science and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dr. Chou is the author of numerous papers dealing with the scalable, reliable network computing and holds patents in this area as well. In addition to his career in industry he has been a lecturer for over 15 years at Stanford University.

Dr. Chou is a member of the Board of Directors at Embarcadero Technologies and a member of the Technical Advisory Board of Webex, Inc.
